How bad is it going to get ?

When considering the economic situation in our country today, I think the question of just how bad things are going to get is on the minds of many people. It seems everyday I learn of a family member, friend, neighbor, or someone who is being impacted by the stress on our economy. How long and how deep is certainly a valid question and yet I think to be honest we must admit none of really knows the answer to that question, except the one who know all things (Acts 17:24-27).

As Christians how are we to respond? First, if we or our family is directly impacted by loss of a job, decrease in wages, loss of savings, or other economic hardship, I think it is helpful to be reminded of the fact that ultimately God is in control. He promised to provide for our needs (Philippians 4:19).

So as Christians we must place our trust not in the circumstances of the world, but in the loving Lord who knows us and understands our needs. The psalmist declared in Psalm 20:7 that some trust in chariots, which are a picture of wealth, since only the wealthy could afford them. At the same time it declares that some trust in horses, which are a symbol of strength or power. Yet the Psalmist declares that the believer ultimately trusts in the Lord, and shall not be disappointed (2 Timothy 1:12).

Next, how do we respond to family, friends and neighbors in need. We are called to provide for those in need. So much that the Apostle Paul said that if we fail to do so we deny the faith an act as unbelievers (1 Timothy 5:8). The duty, responsibility, and one of the highest commands of Christ, is to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). We must reach each out find ways to help both with physical and spiritual needs. God can use trials to cause a person to reflect on priorities and in who they truly trust. Help them to put their trust in the Lord.

Finally, we may not know the duration or severity, but we need to lay hold to the words of the Apostle Paul. He said, “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Phil. 4:11-13).
